Power cut checklist
Most UK power cuts are fixed within a few hours. This checklist keeps you safe and comfortable while you wait.
First 10 minutes
- Check whether neighbours have power. If only your home is affected, check your fuse box (consumer unit) for a tripped switch.
- Call 105 (free) or visit powercut105.com to report it or get updates.
- Switch off appliances that could start up unattended, such as cookers, irons and heaters. Leave one light on so you know when power returns.
- Use torches rather than candles where you can.
The next few hours
- Keep fridge and freezer doors shut. A full freezer usually stays frozen for around 24 hours, a fridge stays cold for about 4 hours.
- Check on elderly or vulnerable neighbours.
- Keep phones charged from a power bank and save battery by lowering screen brightness.
- If you rely on medical equipment, call 105 and tell them. Join the Priority Services Register in advance.
When power comes back
- Switch appliances back on one at a time.
- Check food: if the freezer has thawed, or the fridge has been warm for more than 4 hours, throw out high-risk food like meat, fish and dairy.
